Larron Lerdal

Larron was born in Oakland, California, lived in Egypt for many years, and has now settled in Mesa, Arizona.  Elements of both cultures can often be found in his work. Considered primarily a functional potter, he uses clay mostly, in a drawing and painting aspect.  His utilitarian pieces are highly decorated.  He emphasizes the beauty in items of everyday use.  “Food should nourish the body, tableware should nourish the soul.” Always having a great love of rich colors, he uses a high fire reduction atmosphere. By doing this, he achieves areas of true single colors and many rich combinations over the base and underlying colors, with each piece becoming an individual, no two alike, piece of functional artwork. Larron is primarily self-taught in this craft but was fortunate to attend a workshop with Bennet Bean. He also spent decades working with his mentor and friend Mel Jacobson in additional pottery workshops. He started the pottery program in 1976 at Leisure World and continue to teach there currently. His work has been seen in several publications, such as The Studio Potter Network- March 1992, Clay Times- November/December 1996, Pottery Making Illustrated- Winter 2001. His work has also been seen in the local papers, usually in reference to the Empty Bowls events held each October, of which he was co-chair for three years. His work has been seen in national shows, such as the Studio Potter Show- Philadelphia 1992, Galleria Mesa- “Table Trappings,” Craftsman’s Gallery of the Shemer Art Center, and the Minnetonka Center for the Arts. Locally he has achieved 1st Place at the Arizona State Fair in 1996, 1997, 1998. Larron’s students have achieved 1st, 3rd, & 5th at the Arizona State Fair in 2002, and in 2003 they placed 1st & 2nd.   He takes great pride in their achievements.
